Indian Economic Service. Group A service of Government of India with strength of 500 officers. Major responsibilities include Economic Policy Making and Economic Administration. Posted in almost all the Ministries and Departments of Government of India. Economic Adviser is equivalent in rank to Joint Secretary of Government of India, Senior Economic Adviser to Additional Secretary and Principal Economic Adviser to Secretary.

Appointment to Indian Economic Service is through a written exam followed by an interview conducted by Union Public Service Commission only for Indian citizens. The minimum qualification required is a post graduate degree in Economics. Candidates should be in the age bracket of 21-30 years. After selection to the IES the officers undergo one year of training in the practical aspects of Economic Policy making and Economic Administration.
