‘Vera & John’ is a collection of still-life montages made with a photograph of a note layered over a photograph of a paving stone. Between 2005 and 2014 I collected 112 of these tender and sometimes abrupt messages outlining Vera and John’s mutually supportive roles within a very British family structure. With their focus on the everyday, the ordinary, and the commonplace, these intimate messages hint at Vera’s diverse roles as a wife, mother, grandmother, friend, role model and hub of a complex and close-knit family. The notes also underscore John’s equally important roles, happy to let Vera take the lead and fill-in when needed.
