INTRODUCING PERPIGNAN Languishing in the foothills of the Pyrenees, in many way Perpignan feels as much Spanish as French. Sprawling suburbs radiate out from the tight knot of the old town, with its warren of alleys and quaint tenements coloured in shades of lemon, peach and tangerine. This city is the most Catalan of French towns, and Salvador Dali famously declared Perpignan's train station as the "centre of the world". At just 160 kilometres from Barcelona, Perpignan is the last stop before Spain and has a distinctly multicultural character – Spanish and North African accents are just as common here as French. Historically, Perpignan (Perpinyà in Catalan) was the capital of the kingdom of Majorca in the 13th and 14th centuries, a Mediterranean power that stretched northwards as far as Montpellier and included all the Balearic Islands; the Majorcan Kings’ palace still stands guard at the Southern end of the old town. The city became part of France in 1659, with the Pyrenees Treaty, but Perpignan has always retained its colourful Catalan customs and traditions and is still the third-largest ‘Catalan’ city after Barcelona and Lleida (Lérida) in Spain. Perpignan is a lively and fun city. During the Nuit et Fête du vin primeur in October, the newly produced wine is celebrated (and tasted, of course). The Perpignan experience is an unforgettable one: with its many Spanish descendants of those who fled the Civil War, and its Algerian immigrants, this southern city is a melting pot with a cultural identity that is all its own. Perfect for enjoying some Spanish flavour in the South of France. Perpignan is a very small town and the majority of the centre is pedestrianised so it is easy to walk to and from our venues or other events - no taxis or public transport are really needed. There is a bus that costs under 2€ to the nearby beach at CANET PLAGE (7.5 miles away) and takes about 20 minutes. Information on bus times and where to catch them will be provided nearer the time to ensure accuracy according to the up-to-date time table. As well as the town itself, it is worth trying to find time to explore the surrounding countryside with mountains and beaches in close proximity, scattered with beautiful medieval villages. WEATHER Perpignan is the sunniest place in France, and temperatures – even in mid-October – usually reach between 23° and 28° Celsius. Perfect for a day on the nearby beach or hanging in out in one of the town’s many Cafés, Bars or Restaurants, before you join us for the club nights in the evenings!
