“Safety” as an ecosystem is a pervasive concept in the physical realm of human activity, primarily applied to the protection of human life, health, and property. The technical discussions and components of safety at tactical levels reflect a wide array of midrange approaches in a variety of disciplines, while the number and diversity of safety ecosystem depictions/models give the sense that it’s a complex topic, both broad and deep. The characterization of safety as an ecosystem, a complex network, or interconnected system of risk management, is more than a notion. When taken as the enterprise-level management of risk, mitigation and contingencies in total over the three domains of physical, psychological, and sociological safety, the nexus of all three represents what David Snowden might call a "complex adaptive system in which everything is connected to everything else, and in ways that we often cannot foresee or even see at all until it is too late." The robust Safety Ecosystem concept is comprised of the three domains of Physiological, Psychological, and Sociological Safety, and the alignment with organizational norms, extending to even the largest organizations, like governments, or unions of governments like OAU, or EU.
