Power trio SARAH'S LAST DAY with Stephen King, Shaun King and Stephen Nykolyn is sonic, grinding, psychedelic experience. Hailing from Calgary, the band plays a musical cocktail of original music from lead guitarist/singer Stephen King’s 6 CDs, along with varied covers from Wilco, Josh Rouse, Neil Young, Rihanna, Hendrix, Killers, Black Keys, Rancid, Bob Dyan, SRV, Ryan Adams, Nirvana, Beck amongst many others … all of which Sarah’s Last Day molds to their own inimitable style. Closest style could be described as Indie-Alt-Country-Acoustic-Roots-Jazz-Blues-Rock. Never playing sets or songs the same way twice — sonic exploration can be found in the tenderest of songs.
Stephen King’s been playing guitar for over 30 years; having played guitar for so long, it's all kinda of morphed and squished together. On any given night you'll see him playing acoustic guitar, harmonica, one string diddley bow, Fender strat, Gibson es-175td,, etc... depending on the feelz. As a multi-instrumentalist, he also plays piano, ukelele, charanga, accordian and drums. He’s recorded for about 25 years; his 6 CDs are all 100% solo efforts in different types of studios he’s created over the years.
Stephen Nykolyn has been drumming since he was a fetus. First discovered in his teens in Ontario, he toured as an underage blues drummer, and has played in many bands since, as well as guest recorded on a number of albums. This is what he wrote me when asked him for some bio speaking points:
"I don't know what to add to my bio. Less is more. I don't want to name drop. What you have now is fine by me unless you want to add something about... fuck I don't know. I've done a lot of shows and tours with many Canadian artists. Some very famous internationally. Others should be famous internationally. That's what I'd say. I can't name drop in my bio because I don't really give a crap and we are all equal people. 'I just enjoy playing for the song.' You can quote me on that."
Bass player Shaun King, is also a multi-instrumentalist; bass, mandolin, guitar, vocals, cajone, drums -- and an accomplished mixer -- he's has spent the last few years gigging as "DJ Phillip Ontako," serving up massive flutter wows and trap beats across Canada. Shaun's Father (and Stephen’s brother), David, was a guitar and bass player in the original Stephen King and the Dirge band. David passed away with cancer in 2007, the band pays honest homage to him with every note.
Where did "SARAH'S LAST DAY" band name come from? It reflects current mood, political and economic uncertainty, where many people are facing the despair and opportunity of change. Searching #sarahlastday on Twitter, one will find many such Sarah’s; a reflection of loss, hope, reflection and vision.
Sarah’s Last Day logo? The "Cosmic Cowboy" ... it's a piece of metal art “Grandpa King” made using a blow torch, a welder by trade. The horse resonates as a representation of hard work, honesty and "music that is organic" (not sure how else to describe that?). The horse is getting ready to leap into the great unknown... something Sarah needs to think about now as she move’s on in her life. The universe like flecks inside the horse represent spiritually, heart-centered, the unknown, release, inspiration, joy, psychedelic, cosmic, energy ... all words that reflect in their music and live performances.
