China's Twitter Breaks Record With Over 800k Tweets In First Minute of 2014

Sina Weibo, the counterpart of Twitter in China, has reported a new high as users posted 800,000 tweets during the first minute of 2014. In 2013, the official record was 729,521. The official Sina account recorded the new record as 808,298 posts. During the New Year of 2013, the record was 731,102 in the first minute. During the initial second, the total posts rose 55%, although a definite number was not provided. One of the most likely reasons for the big surge was the collaboration between Sina Weibo and CCTV, a broadcaster operated by the government. According to Sina Tech, the hashtag #2014 became the most popular hashtag with 100 million tweets by midnight on New Year?s Eve. It ranked number one on the daily top 10 list. Sina Weibo users tweeted about their expectations in the coming year, what they were having for dinner and other hopes and wishes. There were also photos of users with their family and friends and places where they?re celebrating the New Year. Sina Tech experts expect the numbers to be bigger during Chinese New Year of 2014. The Chinese New Year is at the end of January 2014 and Sina Weibo users are looking forward to reach 1 million tweets.
