How Do I Share Links On My Tweets?

July 3, 2012
You can maximize your information sharing capabilities on Twitter by posting links with your tweets. Each post can only accommodate up to 140 characters, so it's important that you know how to use URL shorteners?and make more space for your actual message. Here's what a tweet with a link looks like.

How to Post A Link

Step 1:

Open a message box as you would when you post a new tweet or reply to another user's tweet.

Step 2:

In a separate tab, copy the entire URL of the site you want to share with your followers. The URL is the web address or the one that starts with 'http://' and can be found at the top of the web page. You can do this by highlighting the URL until all parts of it are highlighted in blue. Right click > Copy. Alternatively, on your keyboard, press CONTROL+C.

Step 3:

Go back to your message box and type your introductory tweet. You will want your followers to know what the link is about before pasting the actual URL. At the end of the post, right click > Paste or press CONTROL+V on your keyboard to paste the URL. NOTE on URL shorteners: Because the character count is limited to 140 characters, you may want to shorten the URL first before you transfer it to your Twitter message box. To shorten, after Step 2 (above), open another tab that leads to a URL shortening site, i.e. bit.ly, tinyurl, ow.ly and paste the original URL of the website for conversion. Twitter also has its built-in URL shortening feature, represented by t.co. Here's a list of the most popular URL shorteners you can use. Copy the converted short version and proceed to Step 3. This is how a tweet will look with a shortened URL.

Step 4:

Send your tweet. Before clicking Send, check to see if your entry is what it should be; that is, the link was properly inserted and your introductory message is clear.

The Power Of Links

Now that you know how to post a link on Twitter, you now have the power to share more vital information to your followers. Make sure you read about Twitter etiquette first before you go posting.
