A surname first used by Nasir Hunzai, a native of Hunza. His motivation was to transcend tribal identities in northern PAkistan and acquire a larger geographical and community based identity. There are now more than 5,000 Hunzais in the world, from a population of about 40,000 people in Hunza. who have opted to use this surname.
