In 2012, a number of star couples announced their engagements within the 140-character limit of the micro-blogging site. There's no better way for stars to establish their public status by sharing good news on what many would deem a private matter on social media. Much to the delight of their thousands of fans worldwide, these celebrity couples showed everyone that their love story is, indeed, something to celebrate as viral news. 1. Example and Erin McNaught.

The former Neighbours star, Erin, announced that she was engaged to British rapper Example, or in real life Elliot Gleave. The announcement was made just after the couple joined the ARIA Awards in Sydney, Australia. User BiebBiebSee tweeted, ?Example, Erin McNaught to wed in Australia.? Erin was seen with her new diamond ring as she presented the MTV Australian awards.

2. Kat Von D and DJ Deadmau5.

The couple announced their engagement on Twitter last December 15, 2012. The couple was constantly in and out of a relationship until Deadmau5 (@deadmau5) tweeted:

Kat Von D (@thekatvond) immediately replied, ?Mi Corazon!!! Thank you for all the lovely congratulations! Please excuse me while I go squeeze the hell out of my fianc?!?

3. Kelly Clarkson and Brandon Blackstock.

The American Idol winner (@kelly_clarkson) also went to Twitter to announce her recent engagement with her boyfriend of 10 months. Kelly further showed a picture of her beautiful yellow diamond ring then posted, ?Everyone has been asking about my engagement ring, so here it is :) It?s a yellow canary diamond with diamonds around it and Brandon designed it with Johnathon Arndt! They did an amazing job! I can?t wait to make Brandon?s ring with Johnathon as well!? Brandon (@BBlackstock) is a talent manager and the son of Kelly?s manager.

4. Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger.

The rocker chick confirmed the news by retweeting posts by PEOPLE magazine and Perez Hilton which announced that she was set to tie the knot with the Nickelback frontman. PEOPLE magazine tweeted, Congratulations Avril and Chad! Get all the details from @PeopleMag.? Hilton tweeted, ?Avril Lavigne & Nickelback?s Chad Kroeger Are ENGAGED!? The news was made online in August 2012.

5. Keira Knightley and James Righton.

Actress Keira Knightly (@KeiraKOfficial) is bound to wed singer and keyboardist James Righton. The two have been dating for about one year. The news was made in March 2012.

6. Princess Madeleine and Chris O?Neill.

Princess Madeleine is the youngest child of King Car XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia. News of the recent engagement circulated on Twitter in October 2012. O?Neill is a UK-US citizen who works as a financial executive. O?Neill personally asked for the Princess?s hand in marriage from the king.

7. Melanie Sykes and Jack Cockings.

Melanie Sykes (@MsMelanieSykes), former presenter of Big Breakfast, met Jack Cockings (@bespokespartan) who also resorted to Twitter to ask her out on a date. The two had plenty of sweet and even sometimes disgusting exchanges online. Sykes announced the news on Twitter by posting, ?To my beautiful twitter friends just want to let you know that me & Jack @bespokespartan are engaged to be married and we are very gidd xxx.?
