Electromagnetic Pulse: A burst of electrical energy that is the result either of a nuclear detonation or a geo-magnetic storm. Induces large voltage and current differentials across circuits and can cause catastrophic damage to most electrical systems.
An EMP attack is designed to achieve the largest impact with the least amount of ordinance. One nuclear weapon at 250-300 miles altitude could cripple the entire US power grid.
