0 “Safety” as an ecosystem is a pervasive concept in the physical realm of human activity, primarily applied to the protection of human life, health, and property. The technical discussions and components of safety at tactical levels reflect a wide array of midrange approaches in a variety of disciplines, while the number and diversity of safety ecosystem depictions/models give the sense that it’s a complex topic, both broad and deep. The characterization of safety as an ecosystem, a complex network, or interconnected system of risk management, is more than a notion. When taken as the enterprise-level management of risk, mitigation and contingencies in total over the three domains of physical, psychological, and sociological safety, the nexus of all three represents what David Snowden might call a "complex adaptive system in which everything is connected to everything else, and in ways that we often cannot foresee or even see at all until it is too late." The robust Safety Ecosystem concept is comprised of the three domains of Physiological, Psychological, and Sociological Safety, and the alignment with organizational norms, extending to even the largest organizations, like governments, or unions of governments like OAU, or EU.

Each next step we take is a recursion of all the steps we have taken toward solving or resolving the challenges we've managed throughout our lives. However tough the beginning of #2020 seemed, it appears that the streak of woes will crescendo and reverberate well into 2021 and even beyond it. And yet, for most of us, 2020 will not be the first difficult year we've experienced and survived. 2020 will not be the first year we've finished stronger than when we started it in at least some significant ways. Positivity need not be about denying or suppressing the challenges we face, or the toll they've taken. It is about facing forward with confidence rather than dread. Every scar bears lessons, ones we can use to chart our course then take the steps that will count toward our continued growth. 2020 inspired this hashtag: STAYSAFEFINISHSTRONG.

There are three primary domains of safety. 1. Physiological Safety: Our body, brain, and physical state. 2. Psychological Safety: Our mind, thinking, reason, and rationality. 3. Sociological Safety: Our family, peers, group(s), culture, and society. These are the three spaces that comprise a SAFETY ECOSYSTEM. Safety must be a constant feature to keep ourselves and those around us in the best position to make the most of life. Each day, week, month, and year our focus should center on the ability to "Stay Safe, Finish Strong" as individuals, in our relations, and in every situation no matter how challenging..

We shouldn't just "feel" safe. If our real (empirical) level of risk is greater than the statistical mean risk for others, we and our sociological environment are not aligned. The lower the risk, the greater the alignment. Every person would like to be a full member of any group or organization to which they belong. But belonging to an organization and belonging in an organization can be quite different. Our level of Sociological Safety and any variance from the mean in real terms (not just psychological feeling) is the way to understand and measure our alignment with the societies of which we are a part. Sociological Safety is manifest in the strength of “our alignment with society,” whether the societal entity in question is our family, our company, our culture, or our country.
