Creating global awareness for Learning Disabilities in Africa

Resolution to Nigeria Education Problems (RNEP) is an organization of passionate youth  advocating for quality education in Nigeria. This is not only a platform where we come to talk about all the problems we have in education sectors; RNEP is much more than that, we work with indefatigable energy to bring solution to all the problems identified.

It is not every child that is not performing well in school that is dull or mentally retarded. A child who has a learning disability often find out that their output at school doesn’t seem to match his or her potential, despite their hard work. No child should be giving a label as a result of their academic difficulties without proper diagnosis and no child should be classify as stupid or treated inferior as a result of this. It is a very dangerous thing that a child should believe he or she is stupid or dull and inferior to his mate. Schools in Africa needs to begin to stand up more to diagnose children who are having difficulties coping in conventional school environment, and proffer solution for this student rather than let their potential go to waste. Many children are dropping out of school base on different reasons in Africa and Learning Disability is high among this reasons. Parent and teachers should become more aware because children with Learning Disability can have a rich, successful life in school if given adequate supports.

Raising awareness on Learning Disability in Africa. In Africa, where their are no priority in place to diagnose children learning problems, it is easy to dismiss a child with learning disability as stupid and dull, a stigmatization that can end up destroying the child's potential. Children with Learning Disabilities are as smart or smarter than their peers, their problems arises from inability to cope with conventional method of learning which hamper their successful learning in schools which does not give adequate support or special attention to their needs. School should be a place where potentials are nurtured and children with Learning Disabilities has the right to have a rich and successful learning experience irrespective of which part of the world they found themselves. Children with Learning Disabilities are often intelligent with great potential. The goal is to put an end to the stress, the pain and the frustration of going through school being misunderstood, judge, criticize and stigmatize for a child with learning disability.
