The road was known as Jessore Road before liberation. In India, it is still known by that name. Thousands of Bengali refugees used the road to flee to India from torture by Pakistani forces during the 1971 Liberation War.
American poet Allen Ginsberg later famously signified the event with his poem ‘September on Jessore Road’

Jessore Road is connectivity between Bangladesh & Kolkata (India). The Bangladesh part road covers 70 kilometers and trees are hundred years old consider as environment heritage are now under government axe! The agitating environmentalists announced the government won’t be allowed to fell the trees for the sake of ecological balance. They claimed that ‘Development needs should not be pitted against environmental concerns.’ They, however, demanded declaration of memorial trees on the Jessore Road as heritage, as the trees are carrying the history and memory of the Liberation War of 1971.
