When refrigeration was invented people would buy their ice from a company that cut it out of a lake and stored it until sale. People were not used to the new technology of refrigeration and viewed the ice as fake since it was made at home and not by nature. Thats why they called it fake ice.

Mid 19th century slang for ice that was made by a machine. Typically used by refrigeration industry insiders and engineers. Not to be confused with synthetic ice used for sports like hockey.
