STEM is also an acronym for a movement to encourage young students to be more involved in science, technology, engineering and math. That movement, unfortunately, has been conscripted by the government - industrial - military - academic COMPLEX to justify huge financial support from government to support such education. What the complex suppresses is that, for over 20 years, U.S. high schools and colleges have trained more than 5 times the number of "STEM Students" as there are available entry level "STEM" jobs! The U.S. workforce is flooded with such workers who can't find appropriate jobs.
