In 2017 the first pilot experiments will start at the X-ray laser SwissFEL. The new large research facility at PSI will produce very short pulses of X-ray light, with laser-like properties. Researchers will be able to use these pulses to visualize extremely fast processes, such as how new molecules are created in a chemical reaction; to determine the detailed structure of vital proteins; or to determine the relationship between electronic and atomic structure in materials. From such studies, researchers will gain insights which are not possible to obtain with the methods available today.

The Antarctic Circiumnavigation Expedition (ACE) happens between 20 December 2016 and 20 March 2017 and will explore the Southern Ocean by travelling around Antarctica. PSI is participating with its project “Study of pre-industrial-like aerosol climate effects” (SPACE). This blog will provide snapshots of our experiences during the expedition to the extent possible as means of communication are very limited.

The Paul Scherrer Institute develops, builds and operates large, complex research facilities, and makes them available to the national and international research community. The Institute's own key research priorities are in the investigation of matter and material, energy and the environment; and human health. PSI is Switzerland's largest research institution, with 1500 members of staff and an annual budget of approximately 300 million CHF.
